The Alder Forest Canopy: How Lepcha Agroforestry Preserves Black Cardamom & Cloud Tea in Sikkim

Deep within the sacred reserve of Dzongu, beneath the shadow of Kanchenjunga’s glacier crests, the Lepcha people practice one of the most sophisticated indigenous agroforestry systems in the world.

Here, farming does not mean clearing the forest. It means living in communion with the Himalayan alder (Alnus nepalensis). The alder’s deep root nodules naturally fix atmospheric nitrogen into the mountain soil, creating a nutrient-dense living carpet beneath which wild large black cardamom and high-altitude cloud green tea flourish without a single grain of artificial fertilizer.

At 1,600 meters above sea level, glacial meltwater streams rush past emerald tea terraces carved directly into the mountain incline. Plucking occurs only when the morning cloud mist blankets the slopes, protecting delicate polyphenols from harsh solar ultraviolet exposure.

In the evening, harvested cardamom pods and cloud tea are gently cured over rhododendron embers in Pemba’s family stone bhatti. The resulting cardamom yields intense camphor and cedar resin, while the unoxidized green tea delivers spring orchid and fresh chestnut sweetness.
