Kong Sweet & Women’s Cooperative
“Lakadong is not ordinary turmeric. When you crush the fresh root, your hands remain stained with deep amber oil for three days. That is the mineral blood of our mountains.”
— Kong Sweet & Women’s Cooperative, Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya
In the matrilineal highlands of Meghalaya, Kong Sweet leads a collective of over forty indigenous Khasi and Jaintia women growers. For centuries, this specific valley has produced the famed Lakadong variety — an heirloom turmeric with an unmatched natural curcumin concentration exceeding 8.0% (compared to standard commercial turmeric which lingers at 2% to 3%). Every rhizome is planted according to lunar cycles and cured gently in traditional stone jars.
