The Cardiff to Assam Ledger: Why We Built Penbrae & Co
In the nineteenth century, Cardiff Docks emerged as one of the most vital maritime outlets in the world, exporting Welsh coal to fuel steamers navigating the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Ships regularly returned laden with spices, mahogany, and Assam tea chests.
Today, in our packaging studio overlooking the historic Cardiff docks, we have revived this maritime corridor with a fundamentally different ethos: not industrial commodity extraction, but radical single-estate transparency, micro-batch traceability, and deep ethical stewardship.
We travel directly to remote agrarian hamlets in Golaghat, Jaintia, Mokokchung, and Dzongu. We work without intermediaries, paying 3 to 4 times local auction rates directly to sovereign grower families before harvest commences. This ledger is our commitment to honouring their ancestral craft.
